"Hands-on and creative! The children loved being monks and taking part in all of the activities. Well planned and engaging - a great way to teach children and staff about our local Anglo Saxon heritage." - Miss Davidson, Newcastle

Some of the North East's most influential historical figures were Anglo Saxon Monks - Bede, Cuthbert, and Aidan, to name but a few. Through the acts and works of monks, we know about Anglo Saxon lives and beliefs - we also know about the chaos caused by the coming of the Vikings!

Play a game of True or False to learn about the day-to-day life of a monk and find out what life was like in an Anglo Saxon monastery. How did they communicate when observing the strict rules of silence? Learn the ancient hand gestures used at mealtimes - don't forget the salt!

How did monks use their natural environment to provide for themselves and their surrounding villages? Which herbs can treat which ailments? Learn what jobs monks did for their community - it's not all just praying and chanting, you know...

Get hands-on with some replica Anglo-Saxon objects. Can you work out what they would be used for? Can you make a sound with the horn?

Learn how to create beautiful script and handwriting - the most important contribution that monks gave to history - using real quill pens and ink. But how does a wasp help you to write?

Finally, learn how Anglo-Saxons had fun - play a game from times gone by!
